چکیده

[1] The Superconducting Submillimeter‐Wave Limb‐Emission Sounder (SMILES) was successfully launched and attached to the Japanese Experiment Module (JEM) on the International Space Station (ISS) on 25 September 2009. It has been making atmospheric observations since 12 October 2009 with the aid of a 4 K mechanical cooler and superconducting mixers for submillimeter limb‐emission sounding in the frequency bands of 624.32–626.32 GHz and 649.12–650.32 GHz . On the basis of the observed spectra, the data processing has been retrieving vertical profiles for the atmospheric minor constituents in the middle atmosphere, such as O3 with isotopes, HCl, ClO, HO2, BrO, and HNO3. Results from SMILES have demonstrated its high potential to observe atmospheric minor constituents in the middle atmosphere. Unfortunately, SMILES observations have been suspended since 21 April 2010 owing to the failure of a critical component.

Early Results from 4k-cooled Superconducting Submm Wave Limb Emission Sounder Smiles Onboard Iss/jem

Early comparison of O3, HCl, and HNO3 L2 products (ver. 005-06-0032) of the Superconducting Submillimeter-Wave LimbEmission Sounder (SMILES) onboard International Space Station has been conducted. Good agreements are observed among SMILES, SVISAT-1/ACE-FTS, AURA/MLS, and ENVISAT.MIPAS, for O3 and HCl below 45 km. SMILES HNO3 profiles are statistically ~20% higher than ACE-FTS and MIPAS. At high...

BSMILES - A Balloon borne Superconducting Submillimeter-Wave Limb-Emission Sounder for Atmospheric Research

A Balloon-borne Superconducting Submillimeter-Wave Limb-Emission Sounder (BSMILES) to measure vertical profile of stratospheric minor constituents was developed. BSMILES carries a 300mm-diameter offset parabolic antenna, a 650-GHz heterodyne SIS receiver, and an acousto-optical spectrometer. The SIS junction chip consists of two Nb/A10x/Nb junctions connected by a tuning inductance in parallel....

Linearity Measurements of the 640 GHz SIS Mixer for JEM/SMILES

The nonlinearity of SIS mixers is a critical issue for several new instruments which aim for high accuracy. One of them is the submillimeter wave limb emission sounder JEM/SMILES which will observe the spectral transition lines of various stratospheric trace gases. In this paper we present a perturbation technique which was used to determine the nonlinearity of its 640 SIS mixer. The measuremen...

HCI and CIO Profiles Inside the Antarctic Vortex as Observed by Smiles in November 2009: Comparisons with MLS and ACE-FTS Instruments

We present vertical profiles of hydrogen chloride (HCl) and chlorine monoxide (ClO) as observed by the Superconducting Submillimeter-Wave Limb-Emission Sounder (SMILES) on the International Space Station (ISS) inside the Antarctic vortex on 19–24 November 2009. The SMILES HCl value reveals 2.8–3.1 ppbv between 450 K and 500 K levels in potential temperature (PT). The high value of HCl is highli...
